SmartScan printing through QZ Tray is currently in Sandbox.

To print labels from a SmartScan device by using QZ Tray, you must install the QZ Tray root CA certificate on the SmartScan device. Installing the certificate allows SmartScan to trust the QZ Tray print server and communicate with it securely.

Before you begin

Make sure that:

  • QZ Tray is installed and running on the machine to be used as a print server. If you don’t have it installed yet, download QZ Tray from their website and follow their installation instructions.
  • The printer is configured on the computer to be used as a print server. If you are using Zebra printer, see our article on Configuring Zebra Printer
  • The SmartScan device can reach the QZ Tray server on the same network.
  • You know the IP address and port of the QZ Tray server (QZ Tray defaults to 8181 and 8182).

Step 1: Open the QZ Tray server page

  1. On the SmartScan device, open the web browser.
  2. In the address bar, enter the QZ Tray server URL using the server’s IP address and port.

Example: https://10.0.0.8:8181

  1. Use the IP address and port of your QZ Tray host.
  2. Wait for the QZ Tray page to load.

Step 2: Download the root CA certificate

The Android OS running on your scanner device may require the implementation of security protocols, such as a security PIN, before certificates can be installed or managed. Refer to the documentation for your specific Android version for more information.

  1. Find the root CA certificate download on the QZ Tray server page
  2. Download the root CA certificate before downloading or installing any other certificates.

The file name typically resembles: root-ca.cer.crt

Step 3: Install the root CA certificate on your SmartScan device.

  1. On the SmartScan device, go to: Settings > Security > Encryption and Credentials
  2. Select Install a certificate.
  3. Select CA certificate.
  4. Browse to the downloaded root-ca.cer.crt file and select it.
  5. Accept any security prompts to complete the installation.

Step 4: Print a test label from a SmartScan.

First time connection to QZ Tray

The first time a SmartScan device connects to the QZ Tray print server and searches for printers, a security prompt appears on the QZ Tray host computer. The prompt asks whether to allow connections from Extensiv.

  • For silent printing to work correctly, select Allow, enable “Remember this decision”, and then click Accept. This only needs to be completed once per QZ Tray certificate.
  • If this prompt is blocked or dismissed, printing from the SmartScan device may fail.

  1. Click the hamburger menu in the upper-right corner, and then select Settings

  2. Select Print
  3. Click Print a Test Label.

The Printer drop-down menu in SmartScan displays all printers available, not just ZPL printers. Only a ZPL printer should be selected or printing will not work.

  1. Confirm that the label prints successfully through QZ Tray.
