Shipping with FedEx One Rate®

FedEx One Rate® allows FedEx customers to ship packages under 50 pounds at a flat rate and ensures that you always get billed the same rate if you use FedEx’s required packaging. 3PL Warehouse Manager has added these service levels under the FedEx carrier options for One Rate customers to use with SmartPack and SmartParcel. Note that FedEx One Rate® does not support return labels.

In order to take advantage of FedEx One Rate services, you must have the following completed:

  • A FedEx shipping account with One Rate authorized—contact your FedEx representative to activate
  • SmartParcel enabled for your account under Admin > Settings
  • One Rate packaging materials configured in 3PL Warehouse Manager—explained below
  • One Rate service selected in your order—explained below

Step 1: Define One Rate packaging materials

For each package you want to use to pack an order, you must first set them up in 3PL Warehouse Manager. The instructions to do so are as follows:

  1. Navigate to Orders > Manage Packaging.

manage packaging menu option

  1. Click Create to open the Create New Package Type dialog.

create new package type button

  1. Complete each field under General—Package Name and Description are required.
    • Package Name: Unique identifier for the new package type
    • Description: Value used to quickly reference the package details on the Manage Packaging page

The Description field value must match the package description exactly as it is listed on the FedEx One Rate website, except without the registered trademark (®)—for example, FedEx Envelope, FedEx Pak, FedEx Small Box, FedEx Medium Box, FedEx Large Box, FedEx Extra Large Box, or FedEx Tube.

    • Barcode: A unique value users can scan during the packing process to identify the package type
    • Customer: Specifies the customer for which this package type is available—if no customer is selected, the package type is available for use with all customers.
    • Default package: When checked, this package type is located at the top of the package list when shipping with SmartPack—note only one default package type is supported.

create new package type general fields

  1. Enter the dimensions of the package under Weights and Measurements to match the dimensions listed on the FedEx One Rate website. Please note that you may need to convert the measurements from fractions to decimal values.

create new package type weights and measurements fields

  1. Optional: Specify the cost and mark-up rates under Costs and Mark Up. If you specify both a percentage and flat rate for markups costs, both of these fees are calculated and accounted for in transactional package fees.
    • Unit Cost: Cost associated with package type
    • Mark Up Percent: Default markup percentage used to charge customers for package materials
    • Mark Up Flat Rate: Default markup rate used to charge customers for package materials

create new package type costs and markup fields

  1. Click Save to add this as an available package type.

Repeat Steps 2–6 for each One Rate package you wish to define.

Please be aware that if FedEx modifies a package's name or measurement, you must update the package in 3PL Warehouse Manager. To do this, select the package type from the grid, click Edit, make the necessary changes, then click Save.

Step 2: Select supported service level on order

Not every FedEx service level is supported with FedEx One Rate, so you must ensure that the service level selected for an order is listed below. If one of these FedEx service levels are not selected, you will receive an error when attempting to print the shipping label:

  • Two Day One Rate
  • 2 Day AM One Rate
  • Express Saver One Rate
  • First Overnight One Rate
  • Standard Overnight One Rate
  • Priority Overnight One Rate

Service levels can be defined by manually creating/editing each individual order, uploading an order import template, or utilizing an integration.

Step 3: Pack order with One Rate packaging

Once a supported service level is defined on the order, you can pack the order as you normally would using One Rate packaging via SmartPack, SmartScan, or Consolidate Packages.
